Day Forty-Four

Kelah awoke with a start from a dream where she had begun to fall backward into a tunnel, just as she did when the corridor vision had taken her. Her heart beat quickly in her ears and she cursed silently as she realized that was what she had been trying to connect to all these past weeks in meditation sessions.

And now? Just as she was starting to find it in her dreams once again, she woke herself up?

She huffed and opened her eyes with another wave of panic as she realized where she was, still lying in Zan’s arms as the palest glimpse of dawn lightened the window. She had never spent the night before, and she hadn’t really intended to tonight but, apparently, had fallen into a deep, blissful slumber.

Rolling over and seeing that Zan was still fast asleep, she carefully extricated herself and quickly and quietly dressed. She then bent over and stroked the edge of Zan’s jaw to wake her up gently.

“Good morning,” she murmured as Zan blinked slowly and shifted in her direction.

“Hey gorgeous,” Zan croaked with a groggy but adoring grin. “Heading out?”

“Yeah, I’ll see you when I see you . . .” Kelah leaned forward and lightly brushed her lips against Zan’s, too afraid to make this a deeper, more permanent farewell.

Zan’s grin turned into a teasing smirk as she pressed her hand to Kelah’s cheek. “You’ll be back, I know it.” Zan chuckled. “You’re one of us now. You’ll always have a home here.”

Kelah’s breath caught in her throat at the pure look of genuine intention on Zan’s face, and she straightened to look away as her vision blurred under sudden tears. She lowered her gaze to Zan’s legs tangled in the sheets and placed her hand on Zan’s exposed knee briefly.

“Thank you, that means more than you know.” She cleared her throat to remove the thickness and turned once more to smile at Zan with warmth, hiding her vulnerability behind an invisible wall. “Take care.”

Kelah held Zan’s earnest gaze for a moment and considered all of the feelings that she could not name swirling around inside of her before stepping over to the front door and opening it just a crack to peek out into the dark, misty dawn. The village was absolutely quiet and still, only the occasional sound of the guard at the front wall piercing through the very early morning hour. She crept out the door on silent feet and softly closed it behind her as she headed back toward Brishna’s cottage.

Halfway there, though, she realized she wasn’t really in the mood to go back to sleep. There was a strange hum buzzing through her nerves, so she pivoted and aimed for the wall’s stairs. Tomas, the night guard, nodded in surprise as he completed a round of his guard duty and found her topping the stairs and turning toward the northwest corner. She smiled apologetically and tried her best to slink off, staying out of his way.
